David Smith Performer and teacher of Clarinet and Saxophone
B I O
Born and raised in Leeds, I underwent a diverse musical upbringing, learning the clarinet, saxophone, piano, and drums during my formative years. This profound early connection with music led me to pursue a degree in woodwind performance at University. I had the privilege of studying under esteemed mentors including Judith Clare (Northern Symphonia), James Muirhead (Halle), Mike Hall from RNCM, and George Gallway.
After successfully graduating, I embarked on a professional journey that centered around mastering the clarinet and saxophone. I was privileged to work as a session musician for notable television and radio stations like BBC, ITV, and SKY. Additionally, I performed on a number of gospel and library CD recordings, showcasing my versatility across genres.
However, my artistic path eventually intersected with a compelling urge to guide and foster young musicians. Despite tempting prospects such as an offer from Berklee College and the chance to tour with Chaka Khan, I decided to shift my focus to education. Armed with a Postgraduate Teaching Certificate in Secondary School Music from Leeds University, I transitioned into a fulfilling teaching career.
My dedication to nurturing musical talent found expression in roles across different educational institutions. Currently, I serve as the Head of Instrumental Studies at the esteemed Dragon School in Oxford. Throughout my teaching journey, I've had the privilege of engaging with students at varying skill levels, from absolute beginners to those pursuing advanced diplomas. Furthermore, I've had the opportunity to collaborate with prominent classical and Jazz musicians in coaching Jazz ensembles, concert bands and orchestras.
Beyond the classroom, my involvement has extended to leadership
roles such as Head of Woodwind at Uppingham Summer School and serving as the
Woodwind Head and Course Director for the Junior National Schools Symphony
Orchestra until 2021. In addition to teaching and performing, I possess expertise in instrument repairs and maintenance, particularly for clarinets and saxophones. I offer guidance and support in instrument selection and accessories to aspiring woodwind players.
In conclusion, whether it's captivating performances, dedicated
education, or meticulous instrument care, my journey in the world of music has
been multi-faceted. If you you have any questions, require my services as a performer, teacher, conductor or for advice on instruments please feel free to contact me!
